I was also just going to put something up.

Women's marathon goes off today, something like 4:30 Eastern. It'll be 90 degrees and 80% humidity, and they're running at midnight in Doha! Race features several sub 2:20 marathoners, including 3rd fastest ever. Top Americans are Roberta Groner (2:29 at 41) and Kelsey Bruce (2:31). That's going to be a crazy race.

Otherwise, the stadium is open-air but air-conditioned so shouldn't be as bad. Most compelling races mid-d and distance for early in the week are women's steeple where it's Kenya (Beatrice Chepkoech is the prohibitive favorite) vs. USA (Coburn and Frerichs), and women's 800 where USA has 3 medal contenders, including favorite Ajee Wilson. NOP athlete Sifan Hassan, who runs for the Netherlands, is a strong favorite to dominate the women's 10000, she's the new version of Mo Farah. And in the men's 5000s the Ingebretsens (three brothers) of Norway are taking on Ethiopia and the world, USA's Paul Chelimo, an Olympic and World medalist, has an outside chance at a medal but he's been a bit off form all year.

Some good stuff yesterday--(I'll report a day later for spoilers sake)

Women's steeple semi lived up to expectations with Kenya's and USA's top 2 looking great, with the Kenyans controlling each heat. The final on Monday will feature 5 athletes from those two countries going for 3 medals. Kenya wants to sweep, as payback for the 1-2 American finish 2 years ago. Coburn and Frerichs look strong.

800 went close to as expected but Brit Lindsey Sharp and USA's Hannah Green, both medal contenders did not advance out of the first round. But Ajee Wilson and Raevyn Rodgers of the USA looked good in winning their respective heats.

Men's 5000 was hotly contested and the big story was 19 year old Norwegian, a favorite for a medal, stepped into the infield for a few strides and was DQ'd (thanks to the Brits), but appealed and was reinstated because it appears he was bumped into stepping inside the rail and he actually lost a couple spots from that and did not gain and advantage. Paul Chelimo won his heat and if he can hold his form on Monday, should have a chance at a medal.

Women's marathon was crazy to watch. Running at midnight under 90 degree temps with 80% humidity (dew point in the 100s), 2:17 marathoner Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya pulled away over the final 7K to win in 2:32, about a minute ahead of Rose Chelimo of Bahrain (she's Kenyan though). And the biggest surprise was 41 year old mom Roberta Groner of the USA taking a 6th place in 2:38.

I'm a bit jaded by his missing three drug tests in a year, and he was spared a 2 year ban by a technicality and some calendar manipulation by IAAF. And don't even get me started on Gatlin. That said, many top performances in just about any event anymore are questionable.

Congrats to the USA men’s 800 m team to put three in the finals. Brazier looked great winning his semifinal, hardly even breathing heavily.  I loved that mixed 4 x 400 M relay, two women and two men !  Another gold medal for Allison Felix. Would love to see that event in Master’s track.

And who doesn’t love pole vaulter Sandi Morris.

Did you get any updates on Felix's split? That relay was fun to watch. Morris is Amazon Princess Warrior! That was a great competition between her and Sidorova.

Donovan Brazier breaks a 34year old American record to win the 800m. 1:42.34 Incredible race! He was helped by Vazquez ridiculous first 200m.

I figured it was 50. something. Letsrun was railing on her after USAs where she ran like 51.6 (but first race after a difficult childbirth). She's coming back.

I caught the tail end of the pole vault competition and watched the 800 final. Great match up between Duplantis (American jumping for Sweden) and Kendiricks (American). And the Polish guy jumping for bronze was entertaining.

Thanks diablita.  I love her post race interview.  She seems so confident and happy.  "I came here to run!" she says when asked how she felt.

On that note, I think a lot of the distance runners feel the IAAF really let them down by picking Doha.   They were there to run but what horrid conditions.
 Pretty tough to turn down World's but really - the fastest women's marathoner finished in a time about 12 minutes off and something like 40% of the marathon runners DNF'd.  That's huge.

here we go, accidently posted this in the 'saladbar' thread.

The women's 1500 m final should be one of the most interesting and competitive races of these championships. Hassan (NOP/Salazar connections aside) is the prohibitive favorite, and it's hard to see if anyone beats her unless she trips/gets boxed in/has had a bad week because of all the controversy. She can close better than anyone off off a fast or slow pace.

Next best at a big kick is USA's Shelby Houlihan.
Ethiopia's Tsegay ran crazy-weird taking such a big lead in that semi, and she might have tired legs. Kipyegon from Kenya is dangerous (defending champion) and will be in the mix. Britain's Muir is an aggressive runner, but that often bites her back in the stretch, plus she's been hurt over this summer and her fitness level through all three rounds could come into play. Simpson is probably the best 1500 m tactician in the world, men or women (Matt Centrowitz is also very good in championship finals). She has a way of being in the right place at the right time.

My guess Hassan, Houlihan, Simpson in that order. But any one of the others could take Silver or Bronze from the Americans.

It's my understanding that Qatar 'bought' the World Championships from IAAF and the World Cup from FIFA through some backstage shenanigans which no one would ever be able to confirm

Lamine Diack was the former president of IAAF and is rumored to have led the delegation that got a big payout.

The conditions in the air conditioned stadium do not appear to be that bad. There have been some excellent distance performances and the athletes do not appear to be under duress. After qualifying in the steeple last week Emma Coburn stated that she felt fine, and then went on to set the American record in the final. 

The story is quite different with the marathon. The winner ran 15 minutes slower than her PB, and Roberta Groner who relatively speaking had the best night of anyone last week was 9 minutes slower than her best. IAAF has made so many missteps, and this is yet another. If they are going to hold the championships in such a hot place, then at least have the marathon at a different site. Sadly (and this goes beyond IAAF) the Olympic marathons in Tokyo next summer will be as bad or worse, because these will be run in mid-summer daylight.

Today's finals were electrifying, women's 400 hurdles and men's high jump in particular.

Yesterday Delilah Muhammed broke her own world record in the 400m hurdles (52.16) and American Sydney McLaughlin (just 19) was 2nd in 52.23. They just ran away from the field.

Conselius Kipruto, who has been injured much of this year, won the men's steeple by 0.01 in 8:01.

Today's women's 1500 m and 5000 m were won in very fast times.
