i think kraft dinner tastes better, but i'm relying on a 40 year old-ish memory, here.

in a totally unscientific test, it seems Americans tend to prefer the American version and Canadians tend to prefer the Canadian version...

my beloved grandmother served kraft dinner (as it was available in her local market in northern maine), which i suspect has much to do with my recollection that it tasted better.

so, while I was away and not checking FB regularly, Vaughn made a savoury jello dish:

for anyone interested in the recipe, the wieners are Vienna Sausage from a tin, and the jello is made from pickle juice

I have to confess that I am completely grossed out by the vienna sausage, but maybe a little bit on board with pickle jello... at least conceptually...

Huh.  Salty for sure.

I remember eating vienna sausage as a kid but I don't think I could do it now.  And pickle juice jello?  Huh.

heh.  yup

Sometimes a recipe sounds awful as the sum of tasty parts.  This is not one of those times.

I mean, if I ate meat tubes or jello, I feel like I'd try that. Thumbs up from me.

I would totally try pickle jello. I know what hot dogs taste like so I’d probably pass on the weiners.

vienna sausages are more like small tubes of wet bologna than like hot dogs... I have no idea why anyone eats them

here is the linguistic lesson of the day:

In Frankfurt, Vienna sauges are called Vienna sausages (Wiener). In Vienna, they are called Frankfurt sausages (Frankfurter).

Rosanne reports that she made, "Pea soup and dumplings....was delicious!!!"  Comments are about evenly divided between yummy and gross.

Christine made cod heads for supper.

Clifford was not in favor of cod heads and declared that he was leaving the group over this.  Everyone else agreed that cod heads are "some good."

:D

did you catch the discussion about how Newfoundlanders must be very healthy because they always have three veg with their meals? I assumed someone was being cheeky, but reading through the comments it became apparent they were serious

I have been trying to figure out what three veg these are. My best guesses:
- potato, turnip, and cabbage cooked for too many hours too long in jiggs dinner
- potato (mashed), turnip (mashed), and frozen peas commonly served with some sort of overcooked meat
- potato (mashed), turnip (mashed with carrots)
- medley of frozen or canned peas, corn, and carrots

 ???

I need a Newfie Homestyle Cooking fix.

it's the time of year when the Newfoundland Mushrooom FB group and the Newfoundland Backyard Farmers FB group are filled with people posting poorly lit and badly focussed photos of mushrooms they picked asking, "is this edible?"

which amuses me to no end... like, what is the thought process? "I know mushrooms can make me die, so I'm going to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet if they think I should eat these mushrooms I know nothing about?"
