Title: He's going for it again...
Post by: nadra's babydaddy on August 31, 2019, 10:30:30 PM
Eliud has another sub 2 assault scheduled for October.... https://www.ineos159challenge.com/

I know people have mixed feelings about this stuff, but I find it fascinating.  Curious to see how it will all unfold.  As best I can tell it's just him this time as opposed to the 3 guys who were going for it last time.

Make it so!

I find it fascinating.  He's hit every other time from 2:00 - 2:05 (and some greater, of course).  It's time for him to get this done.

Amazing runner!

He just has to pick up 1 second per mile from last time.  Absolutely doable, at least in a vacuum. When you factor in the variables like precision of pacing, weather, nuances of the course, experience gained from the last attempt, his conditioning at the time, grit....who knows?  But it's close enough to make for a good show!

Let the man run!  59:59 pace should feel like a walk in the park now.

Actually according to McMillan it's only worth about a 2:02.  Go figure.

According to McMillan our shorter distance world records are soft.  It's worth a 3:36 mile, a 12:31 5k, and a 26:01 10k!  And the Marathon WR is even stronger.  I don't know how well those translations hold up at Kenyan beast mode level, but the comparison is interesting.  Can definitely tell where all the prize money is going!  :runner:

It was almost Eluid who? today. In Berlin Kenenisa Bekele (world record holder at 5K and 10K now in his late 30s) ran 2:01:41, a scant 2 seconds shy of Kipchoge's world record.

Sara Hall 2:22, Sally Kipyego 2:25, and Matt Llano 2:11 for USA. All PRs.

I mean. That’s not word on the street. Those are facts that have been shared.

They have a tremendous number of pacers for this: many incredible names contributing to hopefully be a part of history.

I still rather would have seen Kipchoge and Bekele head to head in Berlin the other week.

Well, they will be on the street and I'm sure they have the best words, so there you go!  Looks like a 5am-9am vienna time start, which equates to 9pm-1am here in the mountains if my calculations are correct.  Gonna be a late night!   :luvcoffee:

Sounds like he got to town monday and only just got to see/train on the course, which is a little surprising.  Not that it's really a complicated course, but it's nice to see ahead of time what you're working with.

I really think not having multiple guys going for it will totally change the psychological dynamic and make it a lot more difficult than people realize.    But it looks like it will be all hands on deck, so we'll see.

GOGOGOGOGO!!!

The pre-race speculation is interesting.  Some people are throwing out nonsensical numbers like "woooo 1:57!!".  Then people are saying "what if he flops and does like 2:15?"....I think there's virtually zero chance of either (barring some type of last minute illness/injury).  They're going to push a very thin line; not too slow but not too fast.  Unless he's somehow able to kick it up to beast mode in the last mile or two, I don't think you can expect to see anything under 1:59:30.  At the same time, he's insanely consistent, has experienced this simulation before, and by all accounts seems to have the mental toughness.  Even after he 'faded' last time, he still held on for sub 2:00:30.  And now he has experience in his corner.  Combine all that with how perfectly controlled all the extraneous variables will be, I think a major collapse is highly unlikely.  Either he'll barely get it or he'll barely miss it.

He should have picked a downhill Revel course!    :D

Still about 10 seconds under pace at 30k.  Gut check time!  For such a hi-tech event we've seen exactly zero splits.  And the letsrun thread is an endless stream of how female commentators are the worst.  Good to see everything is par for the course.

I'm not sure I'd call that "barely" getting it.  semantics maybe?  But it was an incredible effort.  I really want to see that in an actual race.

I didn't watch any of Sub 2 in 2017 or the documentary that came afterwards. But speed watched this, taking maybe 45 minutes or an hour catching some splits and then jumping ahead. It was pretty cool/amazing. He is the GOAT, although Bekele is damn close. I'm still not willing to fork over $200 for the shoes (or is it $300 for the next version), sticking with my Adidas any potential records be damned. For now.

14:10 5K pace for 2 hours! That's just unbelievable.

BARELYBARELYBARELY!!! I managed to stick it out for the whole thing.  He was right on 1:59:50 pace pretty much the whole way.  Just about perfect in terms of pushing the barrier, but would only take one or two miles of slowing up at the end to lose it....at a speed that’s really uncharted territory.  I wasn’t positive he had it until the pace car pulled off at ~41k and they somehow started accelerating.  So I guess it wasn’t really barely at the finish, but there was at least 1:50 of pretty tight suspense. Those last few minutes (not to mention the whole thing) were something special to watch.

What do I get for voting "Yea?"

Can't wait to see giant treadmills at race expos with a 1:59:40 pace.
