Thanksgiving Menu!
« on: October 29, 2017, 07:43:10 PM »
My first time hosting thanksgiving!

I have decided to have our grocery store cook the turkey. They do an organic, free range thing and I'd just as soon not deal with THAT stress/mess

I just made imitation Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuits, and having learned a bit from the first go at the recipe, I'm confident I can pull that off easily.

Pumpkin pie!

Green bean casserole! (A family tradition)

Stuffing!

Cranberry sauce!

Rosemary-garlic mashed potatoes!

Brussels sprouts with bacon and maple pecan glaze!

Probably also a salad that I made for a work potluck a while back. Various greens, oranges, and pomegranate seeds. Must find the recipe again. It was a big hit, and the light freshness is a nice contrast to the usual thanksgiving fare.

I love that you started this thread! I just sent out invites to my Saturday before thanksgiving party.

How many guests are you expecting? That salad sounds really interesting.

It's time to start planning, isn't it?

Amazing that this is your first time hosting, Luke

5 for sure, but I'll post a week or so before to pick up any friends who don't have somewhere to go.

Typically I go do something fun over thanksgiving, but my parents are traveling here this year, so my first time.

Great point! Hmmm, that's a potential downside to having someone else cook the turkey.

I spent Canadian thanksgiving with my family for the first time in 15 years (it's a long way to travel for a meal)... it was also my brother's 40th birthday.  My brother ALWAYS has fish on his birthday, even when it falls on thanksgiving.  My father recently purchased a tortilla press and wanted me to teach him how to make tortillas.  My mother has recently discovered the joy of green tomatoes.  My parents live in peanut country.  The niece and nephews are into "bar" service these days (salad bar, sundae bar, etc.)... so clearly, we had to have a taco bar:

Mom's secret recipe fried great lakes perch
corn tortillas
flour tortillas
green tomato salsa fresca
red tomato salsa fresca
super hot peanut sauce
toasted black beans
cider vinaigrette coleslaw
potatatas bravas

strawberry surprise, Grandma's recipe, traditional birthday dessert for my brother who made the mistake of being so enthusiastic about it on his 3rd birthday he has been unable to request anything else since

Most years we have MIL and any of our friends and neighbours without a Tgiving meal to go to at ours for turkey.
roast turkey
sausage stuffing in the neck cavity
bread stuffing in the body cavity
roast potatoes
butter basted julienned carrot and parsnip
steamed dark leafy greens of some sort
giblet gravy
partridgeberry (small wild cranberry) chutney
pickled blueberries
pumpkin pie or pumpkin flan
apple pie or apple crisp
sage or rosemary ice cream

I am seriously considering fish tacos for all future thanksgivings.

You should come over! And meet my parents and crazy aunt.

We have two more "maybes" now, a very sweet couple that DBF knows from grad school.

I would love too, but I'm headed up to Seattle to see my parents. :)

I think this might also provide me an excuse to expand my kitchen supplies. I only have 5 matching table settings, and one of them is missing a plate because a friend of my old housemate dropped it. Also, I don't have a nice casserole dish. Clearly I need one for the stuffing.

Hosting this year and very excited!  I have at least 6 with 4 of them being offspring.  Maybe another couple but I don't know if I can work it.  I do not have a big space.  Anyway, it's a traditional meal.
1) Turkey with stuffing - the Portuguese stuffing with pork.
2) fig cranberry sauce
3) scallops with caviar for an appetizer
4) Ceviche - by special request
5) mashed potatoes
6) haven't figured out the veggies yet
7) pumpkin cheesecake with a praline topping
8) Very good red wine.  One is a delicious PT wine that you can't get here.  The others will probably be brunellos...
9) Also, champagne

I've been tasked with bringing pies.  "Pie" actually but I'm going to make it plura.l

I think I'm going to make an apple pie with a shortening crust so that it's parve.  Our friends who are hosting have a set of parents that keep fairly kosher and I'd like them to be able to eat a pie.  For a second pie I may make a combo banana and coconut cream pie (mentioned in my FB thread) if I can get the recipe in time.

I ordered our meal from Whole Foods. Fully cooked, we just have to warm it up. I am also impressed but they are open on Thursday, so picking up Thursday morning instead of Wednesday. It is just the four of us and the two kids essentially don't eat meat. I don't even want a turkey, but DH really wanted one. Since he was unwilling to do all the work, we ordered.

But on the menu
6lb Turkey (didn't know you could get a turkey this small)
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Green beans with crispy garlic (I will be the only one who likes this)
mac and cheese casserole (so my youngest will actually eat something)
Rolls

Some sort of dessert. I might make cookies because I like cookies and am taking Wednesday off. If DH wants a pie, he can go find one himself (I don't like pie.)

I am hosting my kidlets and their families this year, so about 9 people total.

I'm planning out my days this week and came here for inspiration. :D

I'm brining then roasting a turkey.
a simple dressing
sweet potato casserole
roasted small potatoes
a veggie (still haven't decided on this yet)
salad (spring greens, tomato, apple, red onion with homemade vinaigrette)
I have 4 kinds of cranberry sauce: the jellied in the can (my son's favorite!), blueberry cabernet, spiced (normal) and spiced modified (1/2 white, 1/2 brown sugar with a splash of vanilla)
Pies: Pecan, Apple and Pumpkin
Rolls
WINE! Also Brunello!

I think I'm bringing cranberry sauce even though I wasn't asked to.  I usually cook for Thanksgiving and while I SO appreciate our friends' invitation, it just isn't Thanksgiving without the cranberry sauce I make.  We love it.
