Weird knee-ish thing?
« on: May 14, 2015, 10:25:15 AM »
I'm having some strange pain. It's not really knee pain (which I usually think of as centering in the kneecap) and nothing hurts when I'm in motion - running, stairs, walking, etc - but if I sit even for a minute with my knee bent 90-degrees or more, like with that foot on or under the opposite knee, or cross-legged, it really hurts when I try to straight it. It feels the way it would feel if I had the knee bent for hours - stiff to straighten out. It's the underside of the knee/hamstring that hurts though, not the top of the knee.

This is only happening to the left leg/knee. It's also accompanied by some quad pain which I think it an over-training issue. Could they be connected?

If I sit regularly, with legs or ankles crossed or with feet flat on the ground I feel fine. It's only when the knee is bent at a 90-degree angle (or greater) and then, it only takes a few seconds to really hurt when I attempt to straighten it out to stand up.

I just finished a pretty intense 4-week speed-training program.

Am I broken forever?

You might try some deep tissue massage or ART for your hams and quads. Maybe 2 or 3 sessions about 2 or 3 weeks apart.

Thanks Raj - I am hoping it is a muscular thing and not a knee joint thing.

I just did a couple of deep squats, the kind where you keep your heels on the ground and go all the way down til your butt is about on the ground. No pain with that, either going down, staying down, or getting up. I'm trying not to 'test' it so much in case I tweak something unintentionally.

Or roll the backs of your legs out on the foam roller, and while you are at it, you may as well do your ITB and fronts of your legs :D

No, it feels good.  PVC rollers are the hurty ones.

I've heard it hurts.

My daughter bought me a foam roller and sternly told me to use it.  There was some discomfort only when I rolled my quads.  After time, the discomfort disappeared, which I assumed meant whatever problem I had with my quads was alleviated by the foam roller.

I can make it about 2 rolls and any more and I need to cry and apply ice.

But it does what it's supposed to do if you don't wimp out.  (I wimped out.)
