2019 Boston Marathon!!
« on: April 11, 2019, 11:32:17 PM »
I actually remembered 4 days in advance this time!  Looks like another year of crappy weather that could potentially be as bad as last year, which is fantastic.

Men:  Most of the usual players are back.  It'll be most likely between Kirui and Desisa; the two reasonably fast africans with recent success who've consistently thrown down on the Boston and NY rolling-type courses.  Kawabunga is returning and we've seen what the crappy weather equalizer can do for him, but considering all the pieces that had to fall into place for him to win last year, we're essentially talking about lightning striking twice.  The enigma that is Dathan Ritzenhein is also making an appearance and represents perhaps the best american hope, which doesn't say much.  He gets my 'most likely to crash and burn' nomination.  If he isn't a late scratch before the race after pulling a muscle while taking a selfie with a fan, look for him to shatter in a million pieces while high-fiving a spectator in Wellsley.

Women:  Similar story.  Most of the usual players are back, but there are a slew of fast africans with PRs substantially better than Desi's.  We're again looking for lightning to strike twice.  But...weather.  Sara Hall is curiously in the field as well. Haven't heard much from her, but lo and behold, she set marathon and half marathon PRs last year.  But while God clearly prefers her over her husband, her PR is 2:26 which would necessitate a perfect race combined with flops from like 10 women ahead of her.  God doesn't like anybody that much.

Civilians:  Give me names and bib numbers!

My bugle is ready for action!  GOGOGO!!!  :runner:

Good summary of the leaders, especially Kiruri and Desisa as favorites in the men's race.

For fastest US men (at best a podium spot for one of them) I like Scott Fauble's chances, if for no other reason that he went to high school across from the opens space park where I do a lot of my tempo and recovery runs. Nevertheless, he's been consistent and solid (2:12 PR) for the past couple of years. And Shadrack Biwott place 3rd at Boston last year and has had top placings at NYC, so he's also a good threat to make the podium. Ritz is such a wild card I don't even want to guess. He's so talented but so hit and miss, my best case for him however, is a 2:13 and top 7. Jared Ward, a lot like Fauble, got 6th in the Olympics and ran well at NYC last fall (top 6 or 7) and has a shot at top 5 in Boston. Japanese runners Yuki Kawauchi and Inu

For the women Worknesh Degefa appears to be a heavy favorite, ran 2:17 in January, 4th fastest ever. Jordan Hasay has the best PR of the Americans (2:20:57) but she's been injured nearly for a full year, and only did tempo/pace efforts in this build-up. I like Des Linden's chances, not to win, for a podium finish. Hall is great to watch. Yeah Ryan wears God on his sleeve and wasn't always the smartest racer (he ran with his heart not his head), but he's likable and a good coach: do as I say, not as I did. A top 5 for her would be great and I really think she might make the 2020 Olympic team. Sally Kipyego and Lindsay Flanagan could break out with some good results. Flanagan runs for my former club and has run a 2:29.

Obviously I'm not running this year, and won't miss it, but might return ca. 2022 and hope for a better weather day than my Boston debut of last year. Good luck to those heading out to Hopkinton this weekend!

I'll stick to running, thank you.

I like Jared Ward for the same reasons.  Utah represent!   :runner:

Degefa is who I was thinking of on the women's side.  There are just so many studs this year.  I do think Desi will still be up there.  She's in the same class as a guy like Meb; picture of consistency who will reliably finish near the podium every year, who's PR isn't quite fast enough to mix it up with the studs, but will have all the stars align every once in a blue moon and be in a position to win.

NBC Sports Gold - it's like $79 a year but you get all of the Diamond League and a dozen more big-time or championship races.

I'm thinking Hasay or Linden or both on the podium tomorrow. And hoping Fauble or Ward make it, or at least a top 5. Also note that anyone in the top 10 gets qualification for the Olympics under the new rules. That is they don't need the 2:11/2:29 time to get in--so it would be up to the respective country who gets to go. The upshot of that is hope that a bunch get into the top 10.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

It'll be interesting to see how this effects strategy.  Seems like it would make a podium finish less likely by favoring a more conservative, low-risk approach, staying just close enough to the front and picking off people who go for the win and crash. Unless the elements are terrible enough to make all the move-makers implode once again.

I listened to Running Rogue podcast yesterday with some previews and it's likely that the Americans will work together--Ritz, Fauble, Ward, and Biwott so that they have the best chance of getting those higher placings. Podium great, but 4-10 is also good.

They also predict Yuki will take out fast again and the pack will reel him in by the Newton Hills.

Looks like another weather shit show but not as dramatic as last year, although lightning doesn't sound like such a great thing. 61 degree, 62 dewpoint, 19 mpw cross wind from the south.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

If you're year-round track and road racing fan then the NBC feed is worthwhile. Obviously not for just a couple of races here and there.

Damn Blasted! had the morning open. But have to reschedule an afternoon meeting to now, so I'll miss most of the women's race and half of the men's!

Got it now!  Yeah, someone scheduled a stupid meeting here for 9:30 (90 minutes from now) which will be just when things are getting good.  I never have meetings at that time! Sigh.

Looks like the weather may be better than anticipated?

So far I've seen about 15 seconds of runners and the rest wheelchairs.  CtW must be thrilled!

And apparently a 17:30s 5k was brisk enough to whittle the women's field down to 3.  Good times!

Just over 2:21 pace at halfway.  I'm really surprised no one has gone with her - it's not like she's a random no namer.  The pace is fast, but not insane.

Wow incredible finish, one for the ages. And Team USA did well, I think 3 women and 2 men in top 10, men going 2:09s. Haven't seen that since 1983 I think, when Greg Meyer won in 2:09 and Benji Durden broke 2:10.

Wheeeeee! A someone disjointed morning with meetings and all, but I'm finally caught up.  That was great fun!

Men:  Shades of 2000 with three men hitting Boylston Street at the same time, only even more exciting as Cherono didn't get clear until the final few seconds.  Desisa was my pick from the beginning and very nearly pulled it off, so kudos for a gutsy race.  If I'm not mistaken, he's been on the wrong end of two finishes like that now, so hopefully he has another revenge victory or two in him.  If my memory and math are correct, those guys threw down a sub 4:30 last mile.  Great stuff!  On the American side a Faubulous run for Scott (I've been sitting on that for weeks) and also Jared Ward who easily cracked 2:10 and secured top 10.  Big PRs if I'm not mistaken?  They stuck it out up front and weren't afraid to take charge when the pace slowed. Well done!

Women:  Major kudos to Degefa for saying "screw you bitches, I'm better!" and going for it from pretty much the very beginning.  Why the hell nobody went with her is beyond me.  Having the fastest PR in the field and easily topping the 'most likely to run away with it' contest, it should've been obvious that she wasn't going to come back easily.  And indeed Kiplagat closed well and may have won if it was a 28 mile race, but simply had too much ground to make up and still lost by ~40 seconds.  This unfortunately made it not a super exciting spectator race as we didn't get to see much of the chase pack dynamics beyond like, mile 3.  But a fantastic run for Hasay, who looked strong from the little I did see and managed to snag another podium finish.  I wrote her off pretty early because of injury issues and slower times in recent races, but she's a gamer for sure.  I can't wait to see what she can do in future years if she's able to have a solid, injury free block of training.  Another great race for Desi as well.  Vegas odds would've put good money on her ending up somewhere between 4th and 8th or so, and she was right on the money once again.   She's really a gritty racer who you can never count out.  She has the ability to drop back from the main pack and make you forget about her, then 10 minutes later she's right back in there and laying the smack down.  The Jason Voorhees of the sport!

Miscellaneous:  Looks like a much better weather year than last year and what was potentially forecast, which was great news for the runners as evidenced by the much faster times.

From what I can tell, everyone at least managed to hang in there and claw their way home, leaving my bugle and I highly disappointed.  But if anyone is aware of any high profile DNFs, let me know!  Looks like we have Ritz in 2:16 for 19th overall after dislocating a shoulder when a rain drop fell on it.  2:35 for 15th woman in an ungodly performance from Sara Hall.

2:36 and 19th for last year's shocking runner up and Utah native Sarah Sellers, which I believe is right around her PR and quite a bit faster than she ran last year, so still a solid performance and an OT qualifier!

Just ahead of her in 18th was former RI standout Hilary Dionne who's now had another 'Forrest Gump' moment after being passed in the crazy 3 man sprint finish just before the end, after finishing hand in hand with Meb a few years ago.  She seems to be just the right speed where she always finds herself in the middle of the chaos!

Great day of running!

Masters running update
Abdi (Abdirahman) of US 2:19 for 40+
Kate Landau 2:31 for women 40+

Joanie (Benoit Samuelson) 3:04 chip, 3:05:18* gun

Gene Dykes (70) 2:58

*on Joanie, is it a record or not? Here are the rules, they (IAAF and USATF) say that records are by gun time. So her record won't be a record by gun time (old record 3:05:10), but it is by chip time. What will it be?

Gun times are dumb.  Give it to her!  At least after Randy and the marathon investigator guru guy work their magic and make sure she hit all the mats in reasonable times and collected all her book pages.  They should probably investigate the women's chase pack for that matter too, since we saw them for all of about the first 20 minutes.  None of our top American comrades are double letters, so it's probably okay, but better safe than sorry!

Just rewatching for the first time on NBC Sports.  I was giving rojo crap earlier, but yeah, the first half really is unwatchably bad.  Every time there was a shot of the runners, the picture would immediately glitch up or they'd cut away after like 10 seconds.  The rest was all wheelchairs + a shit ton of commercials. They completely missed Degefa's early break and most of the early jostling in the men's field.  It's unfortunate that people paid 75 bucks primarily to follow that shit.

NBD As I mentioned earlier up thread a couple times, the NBC Sports Gold coverage is not just for Boston. It's for about 30 events throughout the year. Sometimes it's good but usually too many cutaways and gabbing. That said, I couldn't even login today but used that local station CBS feed that I linked and that was fairly good, with Shalane Flanagan and Toni Reavis doing the color commentary. And it was free.

You never quite get what you want (although they pull it off in Europe and Canada all the time) but, you do what you can to watch these things.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

That one was better for sure!  Always nice to compare coverages.  I'm sure the second half of this one will be better too.  Easier when there's half the races left to focus on.

We volunteered as I do every year when not running. Worknesh had a huge lead through mile 9. The women’s pack was a good quarter mile to half mile behind her at that point. I thought for sure they’d catch her, but they never did.

The men’s lead pack was about 20 at that point:

Great pics!  Yeah pro racing tip #1, don’t let the woman with the fasted seed time run away with it.  Apparently her lead was up to 3 minutes, which is astounding.  Definitely a tale of two different races on the men’s and women’s side.

Love the pics!

I shall return. But maybe not until 2022. I'm good at procrastinating marathons, especially Boston. Waited 35 years after BQing do to my first.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

The Age Graded Calculator ranks Samuelson's performance the as the most impressive Boston finish on Monday. The actual men's and women's winners rank fourth and fifth.

Samuelson achieved a 97.02 percent score for her 3:04 at age 61 on Monday. Dykes scored a 93.17.

Samuelson is just fabulous.  Bravo!  I was in a car on the way to the beach so didn't get to watch this year.  I feel slightly better knowing that I wouldn't have seen as much as I'd hoped.

Wilson, I'm gunning for a BQ time in late fall which would put me there in 2021.  Come run it then so I can see you before the race (cause I certainly can't hang during).

One of my granddaughters biggest thrills in college was going on a run with Joan Bonoit.  Joan Benoit was a Bowdoin graduate and randomly went for runs with the womens cross country team.
