Air fryer tips and recipes
« on: December 25, 2020, 04:48:11 PM »
I got an air fryer for Christmas. Now what?

It apparently roasts and dehydrates and whathaveyou as well. It has a rotisserie spot, too.

Which one did you get?

I'm on my second one... I did not like the InstaPot combo one at all.

I now have a new Kalorik 26-qt. Digital MAXX Air Fryer Toaster Oven sitting in its original shipping box in the living room and I'm not sure I'm going to keep it...

Mine is made by the company that makes Instant Pot but it’s not the combo, it’s a stand alone air fryer.

https://instantappliances.com/portfolio-item/vortex-plus-air-fryer-oven/

I’m trying out French fries first, of course.

Do you have any idea how long it’s been since I’ve had decent fries?

The fries were good. I just misted them with oil... I might toss them in a little more oil next time. I would not have mistaken them for actual deep fried potatoes, they were clearly oven baked. I might have been expecting too much, though.

I think that's me as well.

We had an old shitty air fryer and an old shitty toaster oven, so we chucked ‘em both and got one of the Cuisinart air fryer/toaster/convection oven things.

Love it!

I make these a lot with the air fry function:

We’ve had it for a while, but I’m still figuring out the air fry temps - it’s easy to burn things because I am used to under-powered appliances :D

Fries and sweet potato fries are the best! Handcut and ready fast. Tater tots and hashbrowns crisp up fasts and nicely in the airfryer. It is also good for things like frozen falafels, veggie burgers, etc. It is quick and it is  alot of trial and error as well as intermittent mixing/tossing/stirring to get the cook even.

Ahhh thank you for the frozen falafel reminder! There’s a guy locally who makes them, just put on my grocery list.

Last grocery trip, I accidentally grabbed Gardein burger patties instead of chicken strips, so I’ll try those in the air fryer too!

People also air fry carrot ribbons.  I think I will try that soon - crunchy bits to add to sandwiches and salads.

Did chicken wings last night and they were good.  I think I cooked them a bit long though.
I did bacon this morning and it was very good.  Going to do french fries later today.
I want to use it heavily for veggies and tofu.

I bought some cauliflower yesterday. That’s my next experiment! Let me know your tofu technique, I’m curious about that.

Yesterday I made cookies. I would not ordinarily make them in this thing because it’s too small to make very many... but I formed the dough into cookies and froze them, and now the kids can bake themselves a single hot fresh cookie whenever they want one.

Tofu is easy, it crisps up really nicely, i usually toss in tamari before hand.

Target has this frozen cauliflower buffalo bites that taste great in the air fryer. https://www.target.com/p/wholly-veggie-frozen-buffalo-cauliflower-wings-13-2oz

Oops, I lied. I didn’t make the cauliflower today. I did make a rotisserie chicken on the spit, though. It came out great. It was faster than roasting in the conventional oven and much less fiddly (I usually flip the bird over midway, no need to with the spit). And very juicy.

I’ll be doing all my smaller whole chickens this way going forward. The only limitation is that any birds bigger than 4lbs won’t fit... those will have to go in the regular oven.

Fried pickles came out very good. My recipe used Parmesan and breadcrumbs as the crust, and you need a creamy dipping sauce.

Agree on the wings.  We also really like the potato wedges (with russet potatoes) and brussel sprouts.

OK.  I have to say I am loving my air fryer.  Easy, fast and delicious.  We did bone in chicken thighs last night. Yum.

I agree! I was kind of skeptical that it was going to be a one trick pony, or that it was just overhyped in general. But it’s turned out to be pretty great for a lot of things, and I’m happy we replaced our toaster oven with it.

That is Eliza’s mission. Not gonna lie, fresh from the oven jelly donuts sound pretty good. I even have some strawberry refrigerator jam I made, to fill them with.

Ok, so how much are you all loving your air fryers? It sounds like they’re getting used a lot?

I don’t want to add another appliance, but some of what you’re making sounds good!

We only got ours because our beloved toaster oven was ancient and needed to be replaced. I did not really want another gadget, but I’m now glad we got it. I don’t really consider it a “must have” in the kitchen, but it’s very useful if you do have one.

Similar to an instant pot - not a must, but gives you some good options.

I was in a bit of a cooking rut and the air fryer got me out of it.

I kind of want the toaster oven/air fryer combo, but I’d have to either give up my microwave/convection oven or my gas oven. I rarely use the gas oven but it’s built into the boat and would be harder to change out.

I hate having to store a toaster though.

I have the air fryer/toaster combo. I had the basket air fryer when air fryers first came out to see if i liked it and then upgraded. I use it a lot.

Love my air fryer and it gets a ton of use, mostly just for vegetables I'd typically roast.

Mine has a rotisserie, though it only fits the tiniest chickens, and you have to truss the hell out of it, but BEST CHICKEN IVE EVER HAD IN MY WHOLE DAMN LIFE. 60 mins at 350. It’s bizarre how good it is. Hubs was giving me a hard time for buying another gadget that would take up space, but then he was like DAMN THAT CHICKEN IS GOOD

Yes! I can’t rotisserie a bird bigger than 4lbs... but that bird is SO good.

Chicken with skin on is pretty great no matter how you make it in the air fryer.

I have a Vortex, which is made by the instant pot people. I didn’t pick it, it was a gift, but I definitely recommend it.

I definitely do not enjoy it. I have some food safe reusable elastic bands that make it a pretty quick job, but it’s still more hands on work with a raw chicken than I really prefer!

Hmmm, the rotisserie function might put me over the edge. We had to stop buying the Costco chickens after reading an article about how horrible they’re treated and we’re missing it a lot.  Which one do you have orza? There was a model I saw a few weeks ago that looked kind of neat, but I know nothing about it function wise.

I just purchased a Ninja 4qt air fryer with gift cards I had. I truly hope this will get me to cooking more food than grazing on foods day in/day out.

I think I will start with veggies I normally roast.  Perhaps chicken breasts as well.

It's fantastic for small meals. It always seems like too much to use the regular oven for stuff, but I never mind popping something in the air fryer.
