What's your favorite retro food?
« on: September 02, 2019, 05:37:32 PM »
Right now, mine is deviled eggs.  I started making them earlier this summer and my guy's kids love them.  I love them.  Little bullets of delicious, decadent protein!

Yum!

I would totally still happily eat Jello with canned fruit in it.   :D

Deviled eggs are definitely on my list.  What do you do to put the devil in them?  I add a fine dice of jalapeno, but in a pinch, I've got some very hot ground pepper.  Got to be careful with that stuff, though.  I don't know where it falls out on the Scoville scale, but pretty high.

Tuna noodle casserole, but only if it’s my mom’s recipe.

I feel like we eat pretty retro, so it's hard to say.

Maybe the xmas sweets.  My mom used to make some cheerio and peanut butter square thing that I loved as a kid.

twice baked potatoes

I used to love tuna melts but haven't had one in a billion years.  I may have to try that.  Except 12 year-old tuna melt-loving me didn't wonder which gluten free bread and rennet-free cheese would go with low mercury tuna and paleo mayo

We eat American style tacos at least once a week. So I'll go with that.

But retro/Americana classic food is trendy again.

I loved deviled eggs.  Are they retro?

My stepmother makes the BEST deviled eggs.  Aside from the green olives I have no idea what she does.  I think they are good because she is related to the devil...  I also don't think deviled eggs are retro.

I kind of like that pale green colored cool whip and marshmallow "salad".

Is canned fruit and cottage cheese "retro"?  My parents used to feed us that as dessert.  I'd still eat it.

That's cause you're Southern.   :D  They are definitely retro, but yes, retro food is making a comeback.

I like the all sorts of ways and usually add:
Mayo, mustard (kind depends on the kick I want), a bit of relish, something spicy (ie pickled jalapeno, hot pepper etc). On top a bit of chives and a dusting of paprika.

I’ve been seeing deviled eggs on menus for the last few years. They are popular again because people want more low carb options, IMO.

That's Watergate salad, I believe.  One of my friends brought that to a b-day party (in FL) earlier this week.  It definitely references Jello and aspic salads of yore: Jell-O Art of the 20s and 30s.

Likewise, I  (a bona fide Northerner) do not consider deviled eggs to be retro. Other examples of so-called retro food in this thread so far strike me as  basic 'Murricanized comfort food.  For true retro cuisine, check out the Gallery of Regrettable Food.

Those have been on menus around here for a long time. People just love tots, I guess.

we had a retro food neighbourhood happy hour potluck earlier in the summer... we made spinach dip served in a loaf of pumpernickel, and devilled eggs (admittedly, tea eggs, devilled with wasabi mayo... but still, devilled eggs)... oh, and plain chips with french onion soup mix and sour cream dip

neighbours brought:
cheese and gherkin puffs
cheeseball
meatballs cooked in grape jelly
shrimp ring
ham salad pinwheel sandwiches
7-layer dip (but with 5 layers: ground beef, cheese, refried beans, salsa, sour cream)
chocolate covered strawberries

NOTE: with the exception of one neighbour originally from Massachusetts (cheese and gherkin puffs), we did not tell the neighbours it was a retro finger food potluck, because that's just how they operate (see Newfie homestyle cooking thread) on the day-to-day

Oh, I don't know if there is jello in it.  It has more of the cool whip consistency than the jello consistency.  Jello consistency is very off-putting.

I have eaten tomato aspic before.  It's disgusting.

I have seen some "different" deviled eggs in the past couple of years as restaurant appetizers.  Like truffled deviled eggs at a fancy steak place.  Or citrus and tuna deviled eggs at a sushi place.  I love that stuff too.

Yup and yum! Tots are also so much better at a restaurant where they use the deep fryer than when you make them at home in the oven and they are vaguely soggy.

Also good, tots with sriracha mayo.
