Beer
« on: November 22, 2013, 09:31:31 PM »
I think it makes me sick. Just one or two and the next day I have a splitting headache and nauseousness. I can drink 5 liquor drinks and be fine. Gluten is not a problem for me. So what could my issue be and why is it suddenly a problem. The only beers I can safely drink a couple of are light beers.

Could be the hops? You could make hops tea and see? Wine does this to me now. it didn't when I was younger.

it may just be a phase.

there was a period in my life when alcohol of any kind would cause severe allergic reactions (hives and swelling).

I went sober -- I had to (obviously) -- but then one day, said fuck it and had beer, and whaddayaknow, everything was fine again.

Try hard cider. If your system handles it okay then you've found yourself a decent substitute for beer.

I dont like hard cider very much.
I do love cocktails though.

I'm the same way with tequila & chardonnay.  I also have oral allergy syndrome to carrots, which is supposedly related to an oak allergy, for which I tested positive.

Tequila & chardonnay both use oak barrels. I don't think it's a coincidence.

interesting stuff

A friend of ours was having issues with beer and discovered it was a barley allergy.

DH was finding he got a headache after drinking red wine.  A friend asked if it happened after drinking N American reds or all reds.  Sure enough, it seems to be only N American reds.  (and hey, I'm a N American red!)  We still haven't tested with N American Organic wines to see if those bother him, too.

That's interesting.  There are chardonnays where they age the wine in stainless steel vs. oak barrels.  You could try one and test out your theory.  Anybody at a wine shop should be able to help you find one.

I had to quit eating pancakes, even though I loved them.  I do not miss them anymore. Why would you want to get back to something that makes you sick, regardless of the issue that causes it?
