Anything other than the usual chicken breasts, turkey breasts, egg whites, or nonfat dairy?
I was also told to avoid nuts, coconut, and avocado even though they don't contain cholesterol. :confused:

So, everyone on my nutrition plan seems to LOVE this recipe. They call it "crack chicken". I am not sure if they ranch dip would cause it to be too much sodium for you but there might be low-sodium options.
5 pounds of chicken, 1 packet of ranch dressing mix, and half a bottle of Franks hot sauce in the crockpot on high for 4 hours. Once the chicken was cooked, I drained 90% of the juice and added in 8 oz of fat free cream cheese. I let the cream cheese melt a bit and then shredded the chicken in the crockpot.

This is a very popular superbowl recipe. I think the sauce is high in sodium, too.

I think Bison works. Costco has incredible bison hot dogs, though expensive. I can find Bison alternatives to beef pretty easily around here... skirt steak, rib eye, ny strips...

For most people, dietary cholesterol has little impact on blood cholesterol due to the tight regulation of cholesterol biosynthesis in the human body. Or are you one of those folks who is sensitive to dietary cholesterol?

I don't know. That is what I am testing in the next 3 months...with my sample set of 1. :D I have less than zero desire to take statins...especially at 38.

Yes...most (all) beans give me major GI distress, especially lentils...no matter how they are prepared or cooked (thanks IBS).
But also the husband won't eat any beans...ever.
He also won't eat fish...although sometimes I still make it for myself and just make him chicken instead.

Ah. I do ok with pinto beans in moderation (although I don't like them outside of chili), blacked eyed peas, green peas, and whatever beans those are in pork n' beans. Chickpeas/hummus are the devil. The fat white beans also did not do well, but at least it wasn't like food poisoning. And sadly, black beans are a no-go for more than about 2 tablespoons. And I LIKE them.

My biggest worry would be the risk of diabetes simce I have a strong family history of type 2. But the potential for muscle damage concerns me.

I think it would still taste great without the ranch or the hot sauce. Just flavor it with things you don't hate (if any :P). Seriously, crack chicken is good eats for people trying to consume a lot of protein without too much fat or carbs. I made five pounds of it the other day and it's almost gone. Definitely on the permanent rotation now.

The risk for rhabdomyolysis is pretty low at a low dose for generic Lipitor.
Taking a dietary approach is worth a shot, and reducing saturated fats may be a good approach, but be aware that lean meats, while lower in sat’d fats, may still have a lot of cholesterol.
Recommend that you take a look at the FDA labels for statins, and look at incidence of adverse events. *points to StatistiCat* :)

Ya...I eat chicken probably 8-10 times a week as it is now. I am sad about having to give up all the other meats that I eat for variety. You also just happened to hit on ranch which is my absolute most hated food/condiment. :d
And I have decided to say a big ole fuck you to ETP and their stupid obsession with sodium so I will be continuing to buy prepared chicken for salads. I quit ETP today. :)

Well, at age 26ish, I thought I was too young to be taking an antihypertensive, but...
Are you drinking a liter or so of grapefruit juice a day? Drug-drug interactions w/ grapefruit (https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/medicines/does-grapefruit-affect-my-medicine/) Also, dose and timing make a difference, e.g., take the statin at night, the half-life of clearance/metabolism of atorvastatin is 7 hours, so a glass of grapefruit juice in the morning should be fine.
That said, non-drug approaches are always best, but if it doesn't work, don't freak out if you need to take a medication of some sort.

It does feel like if anyone "finds out" that I have high cholesterol it feeds into the fat girl who eats crap all the time stereotype. But I just need to get over it. :d

I am going to give the diet thing an honest try for three months and then give in if it doesn't work.
I need to do some more research on supplements that are supposed to help...I am always suspicious of supplements.

I, too, have high cholesterol and don't want to take meds. It was just a borderline issue, like 220 just in June, and then I called the blood donor hotline to see what they measured when I gave blood last month, and it said my cholesterol was over 300. :( Could it have been an error?

I think its more accurate if it was fasting...which it wouldn't be when you give blood.
Did your Dr not want to follow up after your high cholesterol in June? Mine set a 3 month followup blood test and mine was 234 so not all that much higher than yours.

I don't mind oatmeal.
There's a fair amount evidence to suggest that the beta-glucans (a type of soluble fiber) found in oatmeal can help lower blood cholesterol, in particular LDL-cholesterol. The proposed mechanism for this is pretty cool (https://www.eufic.org/en/healthy-living/article/eating-oat-beta-glucan-regularly-helps-maintain-normal-blood-cholesterol).
I love steel-cut oats. For me, they're great for appetite control, and I make them w/ a 1:1 mix of water and 1% milk. That plus a poached egg boost the protein content of my breakfast. I don't have cholesterol concerns though. Additionally, I don't "do macros" but as a bona fide biochemist, I am much more focused on glycemic load, hence the mix of carbohydrates and protein. Not sure how the higher non-soluble fiber content of steel-cut oats would affect your IBS though.
I'll note that although some of the lean meat suggestions above are lower in saturated fat, than, say, a marbled hunk of sirloin strip, their cholesterol content is pretty similar.

I have been putting scrambled eggs in my salad. I put a little tamari on them (you can do aminos instead since no soy).

Unfortunately coconut aminos don't have a whole lot of flavor. I never bothered to replace them after we moved because they frankly weren't that good.
But I am fine with hard boiled egg whites on salad.

Hopefully it was the lack of fasting.
My HDL cholesterol was 80 something so the doc said it made up for the overall level.

I've been looking at my veggie protein sources for you. Trader joe's high-protein veggie burgers are pea protein based. They are ok. Not my fave. At least some of the beyond meat products are soy free. Field roast products also appear to be soy free.

Chia seeds might be a good option. A 1 ounce serving has 4.7 grams of protein, but they are also high in fiber, which is supposed to help with cholesterol.

MM - your soy symptoms sound just like what happens to me when I eat more than a few bites of hummus. Waking up in the middle of the night with hours of terrible cramping and feeling bad and then yeah, like food poisoning (the non-vomiting side). Some other beans make me uncomfortable, but not a that level. Beano has never helped.

You can be chickpea intolerant. Its a very similar protein to soy.

I'm an N of 1, but I have found that fish oil pills have helped my cholesterol immensely. Last I checked, larger studies don't show that they are effective for lowering cholesterol, but for me they have been. As a side note, I started taking them for dry eye, not cholesterol, but since I have been taking them my cholesterol levels have been really, really good despite very little change in diet (my diet is ok...not awful, not spectacular.) They aren't that expensive and most people tolerate them so it might be worth a shot.

Yes it has. If I skip a few days I can tell a difference. The biggest helper was switching to systane nighttime stuff, eye drops

Fish oil is also good for inflammation. I do not take it being veg, but i recommend it to my patients.

I use nature’s made. They sell it at Kroger, typically BOGO. (Don’t know if u have Kroger, it is sold lots of places but found that is the cheapest place.)
They do have a burpless variety. I don’t bother with that because it doesn’t bother me. I take 2000mg a day (or 2400 if I buy the 1200 mg.) you can take more than that but I haven’t needed to.

I don't know. They don't do phone or email...only in person appointments. They will call me to make an appointment but the Dr doesn't call.
