huh... the only thing my neighbour ever mentions is the grape jelly, but I will have an opportunity to ask her tonight

Please ask how she feels about cubing the cheddar but slicing the pickles

Yum!

I would totally still happily eat Jello with canned fruit in it.   :D

I LOVE jello with canned fruit!

That's Watergate salad, I believe.  One of my friends brought that to a b-day party (in FL) earlier this week.  It definitely references Jello and aspic salads of yore: Jell-O Art of the 20s and 30s.

Likewise, I  (a bona fide Northerner) do not consider deviled eggs to be retro. Other examples of so-called retro food in this thread so far strike me as  basic 'Murricanized comfort food.  For true retro cuisine, check out the Gallery of Regrettable Food.
Retro doesn’t have to be regrettable. I consider meatloaf retro too. Food that were popular in yesteryear and fade out as tastes change, then come back.

Caribou has a great list!

Hmm...stuffed peppers are ethnic; I personally wouldn't consider them retro any more than stuffed cabbage.

If it was served at the American dinner table during the late 1950's early 1960's, it's retro.

1! Esp if it has gone out of favor.
Ethnic and retro do not have to be mutually exclusive.

ETA: I was chuckling today thinking about this thread and all the different definitions of retro.

Even the 70s. Fish sticks, steak fingers, canned vegetables as a side, banana pudding.

Oh man, I used to love fish sticks and Stouffer’s spinach soufflé as a kid. And banana pudding with Nilla wafers was a fave too. And one of the few things my
Mom made that I loved.

Pepperidge Fawm used to make frozen za. I loved it as a kid, but, in retrospect, the sauce was too sugary sweet.
