I had salted cod with mashed potatoes and bacon last week. :) It was ok... very heavy.

salt cod with potatoes and bacon is excellent when the weather is blustery.  i don't know that i'd want to eat it in the summertime.

My mom used to serve salted cod with mashed potatoes. I didn't like it as a kid but I bet I'd like it a lot now.

No, there were two mounds of mashed potatoes, a mound of salted cod, bacon sprinkled all over and a side of chow. I thought it tasted best all mixed together, though. It’s not really my cup of tea but wanted to try salted cod.

This was in Shelbourne, NS. We are now in the Bras d’Or lakes and I’m looking forward to finding some wild blueberries.

If you are in the Bras d'Or Lakes region, you really should eat eel. Might be a tad bit early for blueberries in Cape Breton, but maybe not.


In Newfoundland, people make salt cod and potatoes, which would be salt cod boiled in a pot with potatoes then separated out for serving. Topped with rendered salt back fat and scrunchions. Might be served with mustard pickle. Similar to what you had anyway. I find it really bland. Some people love it.

IMO, the best things to do with salt cod is to soak it, poach it, then marinade while still hot in a red wine vinaigrette... when cooled to room temp, serve in a salad with thin sliced radishes and thin sliced red onion, lots of parsley and a bit of lovage.

well, we ae all sharing the north Atlantic ocean... same land resources too (caribou/reindeer, partridgeberry/lignonberry, bakeapple/cloudberry, blueberries, grouse, hare, etc.)

the scandinavian climate is a bit more conducive to agriculture than here

well, Beulah had some fish and potatoes with ketchup for dinner last night


Arlene had breakfast for dinner, including some fried bologna, and ketchup


Bill pimped up some velveeta cheese shells by adding some colby cheese and marinated mushrooms and sprinkling with parsley (cat seem skeptical, maybe because there's no kechup?)



on the bright side, it is the tail end of strawberry season here... lots of fresh strawberries available at U-picks, farm markets, roadside stands... and not one person in the FB group appears to have been eating strawberries... I have to assume that no one has been able to eat strawberries since that short cake bread heel substitute was posted

After looking at it a little too closely, I think it is just very evenly and thickly spread butter. So props to Arlene on her bread buttering skills.

it was clearly a gluttonous weekend involving a lot of french fries based meals

Wanda had takeout chips-dressing-and-gravy (this is a very traditional way to serve fries in Newfoundland... when you order fish and chips here, you are always asked if you want dressing and gravy on the fries, it is that common... the dressing is like bread stuffing for poultry)


Tony took a less traditional route and ordered what looks like fries with cheese and gravy... with some ham or maybe bologna added. The receipt is from somewhere in Quebec, so I am optimistic that is real poutine cheese and poutine sauce.


Tanya was feeling nostalgic for fries with meatballs in gravy... and added cheese just because

for those who are curious, she used the Fraser Farm brand of meatballs in gravy, which there seems to be a good consensus this is the best brand for the purpose of spooning over fries...


Lori made corned beef "poutine"


Troy glammed it up with bay scallop "poutine"... note the classy wedges instead of traditional fries




on an unrelated note, Rosalie's granddaughter had a birthday, and I would be a terrible person if I didn't share a picture of the cake she made, which everyone agreed was really gorgeous and what little girl wouldn't love that cake

I am just noticing that Wanda seems to have put ketchup on top of her chips-dressing-and-gravy. I am having trouble getting my head around that.
